Update 15:22 UTC Many houses suffered at least minor damage, like cracked walls and fallen tiles. Some houses are severely damaged, with collapsed walls, etc. So far no injuries are reported.
Magnitude 4.6 is reported by chinese authorities. The epicenter is located in southern Yunnan, close to the border to Laos.
First reports mention cracked buildings in towns near the epicenter. More damage reports are expected to follow. Quakes of this size in Yunnan generally damage many hundred buildings. Today’s quake is the fourth this year in Yunnan which causes damage.

Extremely dangerous earthquake/aftershock in Yunnan, China – at least 5 people killed and 36 injured

Update 12:53 UTC : The death toll has unfortunately risen to 5.
36 people have been injured by the quake. At least 15 of them have been hospitalized.
The fatalities have been recorded in both the counties of Shangri-La and Deqen (Yunnan Province).
The present damage and injured/death toll may climb further the coming hours as rescue teams will further search the area.

Update 09:57 UTC : The Chinese press is now reporting the death of 4 people and at least 17 injured. Telecommunications were down in some parts of the hardest hit area and emergency units are being installed by the Chinese authorities. A lot of landslides have been reported in this mountainous Yunnan area. Assessment is still continuing but the following numbers can be reported as minimum damage :
– 600 rooms have collapsed
– 55,500 rooms have been damaged to different extend
– +9,000 residents have been affected and had to live in tented camps or with relatives.
Update : At least 3 people have been killed by this earthquake and 17 have been reported as injured. Many houses (who might have been already damaged from the M5.1 earthquake) have collapsed and even more damaged further.

Update : Also tourists seems to have been involved in this earthquake. The greater earthquake area is a highlight in many Chinese tours, a visit to the town and Monastery of Shangri La, also called Little Tibet.

Update 13:56 UTC : New update from the assessment and rescue teams in the earthquake zone : 2 counties, 19 villages and 9176 people were affected, 56 houses collapsed, 45 houses severely damaged and 266 houses slightly damaged.
Update 07:47 UTC : At least 36 houses in Yunnan and Sichuan collapsed, some hundreds were damaged. More than 10.000 people are affected. Rescue teams sent thousand of tents and food to the quake victims.
Update 06:36 UTC : Many houses in Yunnan and Sichuan close to the epicenter were damaged by the quake. Some of them severely, respectively nearly collapsed. Many landslides occurred in the steep valleys, which blocked and damaged roads and destroyed water pipes. Some 200 people were trapped on a road. Rockfalls in villages caused additional damage. So far, no reports about injuries, but approx. 4000 people are affected by the quake.
An aftershock with M 4.4, which occurred some hours later, caused additional damage.

Update 21:47 UTC : As usual, International seismological agency data are varying a lot compared with the Chinese data. We trust however the Chinese data based on our long experience with Chinese earthquakes.

Update 21:37 UTC : CEIC China reports a Magnitude of M5.1 at a shallow depth of 9 km. Based on our experience with Chinese earthquakes and our knowledge of the area, we think that this earthquake will be damaging.
The area is very mountainous and the earthquake has struck on the slopes of high hills who are bordering a deep river valley.
More to the south is Shangri-La a location know for his beautiful Monastery which is being visited by huge numbers of tourists every year.

Update 19:28 UTC : In addition to the 1405 collapsed rooms and 83434 damaged rooms, this has combined with other infrastructure losses to cause at least 350 million CNY damage (around 55 million USD). 12000 people have been relocated and at least 130000 people have been affected. The injury total remains at 3 severely injured and 27 slightly injured.
Update 17:47 UTC : The earthquake did affected six townships in three counties : Eryuan, Yangbi, and Yunlong (9.2 million people). The houses of 17,594 households has damage in various degrees and 83,434 rooms have been reported damaged so far.
Update 13:33 UTC : A far from final report states that 3 people were seriously injured and 27 slightly injured. The material damage is however far reaching. A lot of infrastructure like government buildings, schools, roads, water distribution, electricity have been damaged in various degrees.
At least 2500 houses were damaged and 700 collapsed. This is only an intermediate report as the assessment is still going on.
No fatalities reported (which will probably will be final).
The most affected county (and city) is Eryuan, a county with a population of 330,000.

UPDATE 06:47 UTC:- There have been at least 20 injured, 700 rooms collapsed and 1800 rooms damaged so far in Yunnan. More damage is expected to be counted given the dense population of the area.
UPDATE:- The CENC has stated that it had a magnitude of 5.5 and was 9km in depth. The Yunnan Province Seismological Bureau has started grade IV emergency response which means they are expecting major damage.
This earthquake has likely caused some damage in Dali and Shimen in Yunnan Province of China.
