Update : Due to the deep hypocenter, this earthquake will have been felt by millions of people who, if the data are right, will all of them have felt a weak or max. light shaking
Update : ER does not expect damage because of this earthquake. 2 main reasons for this : a) a deep hypocenter which means that strong shaking waves will be weaker when they arrive at the surface and b) the epicenter below the sea floor (below land is always more dangerous)

Update 15:19 UTC : More reports are coming in from landslides and fallen tiles of roofs, everything we consider slight damage. Due to the fact that insurance companies will have to intervene to pay back some damage for those insured against earthquakes, we are calling this earthquake a CatDat Orange (CATDAT James Daniell)
Some of the experience reports of our readers :
Chania : was in supermarket and all the produce jumped off the shelves onto the floor. They had to close the shop (large Marinopoulos at Mournies)Chania – I was in the smallest room of the apartment, which was a stroke of luck, as it happens. When it did happen I very quickly recognised it as an earthquake, but as it escalated I soon realised this to be by far the strongest I’d ever experienced. Seemed to go on for close to a minute; thankfully the apartment withstood the swaying with far more calm than me, given the empirical evidence from the smallest room in the apartment! Chania : we could see earth moving and cars shaking. Cars alarms went off. Many were scared. We were also scared, but happy to be on a beach, and not in a building.
Update 15:19 UTC : According to «Flashnews.gr» (with news from Crete) vibration was long and there has been slight damage mainly glass doors smashed in the Old Town of Chania, while testimonials speak for marble that fell from balconies in the center. Kritika through said a citizen was slightly injured in his attempt to jump from the window.
Update 15:06 UTC : Some early reports are mentioning minor damage in houses due to fallen objects, nothing more at the moment.
The Greece Institute of Geodynamics is somewhat different than the other sources. GIG reports a Magnitude of 6.2 but at a depth of 60 km (less dangerous than the other values).
Update 14:26 UTC : The island of Crete had once again a narrow escape from a damaging earthquake. 30 km more to the east and the damage might have been very huge, even at the current depth as the sea is weakening the impact considerably.
Update 14:10 UTC : Below the seismogram as recorded at Gavdos (courtesy Geofon). The oscillations after the mainshock are small aftershocks
Update 14:03 UTC : The earthquake was felt completely different in various parts of Crete. As could be expected stronger to the west of the island than in the middle or at the eastern side.
Update 13:53 UTC : The theoretical damage engine from QAlarm has reports a max. of 20 injured and no fatalities based on more dangerous data than expected by EMSC (M6.6 at a depth of 40 km)
Update 13:47 UTC : The earthquake has also been felt well on the Northern African coast (IE Alexandria in Egypt)
Update 13:45 UTC : EMSC has changed his earthquake data into a Magnitude of 6.4 at a depth of 47 km, normally a lot more dangerous than the initial values, but based on the received intensities we can confirm our earlier expectations.
Update 13:41 UTC : We expect a lot of moderate to weak aftershocks for the coming hours and days.
Update 13:38 UTC : The shaking intensity values we are currently receiving from our readers are showing a moderate to strong shaking, which is normally just below the damage level. In other words based on all available data we have at this moment only slight damage is still a possibility.
Update 13:37 UTC : The depth of 60 km (preliminary data) is also the reason that the earthquake will have been felt in a very wicde area of hundreds of km.
Update 13:35 UTC : We do not expect any serious tsunami treat because of the depth of the earthquake (Focal Mechanism is not known yet at this moment).
Due to the intermediate depth of the earthquake, we expect maximum slight damage on the eastern part of Crete.

Strong earthquake(s) in the Kamena Vourla area Greece – at least 300 houses damaged
Last update: August 7, 2013 at 10:30 pm by By Ashish Khanal
Update 22:26 UTC : Our first estimate was after all very right. The shallow epicenter and the soft soil may have been the reason why more than 300 houses have sustained damage.
Update 14:52 UTC : The mainshock caused that two people were injured. They are builders whose scaffolding fall by the shaking.

Update 13:52 UTC : A new M4.6 aftershock occurred a couple of minutes ago. This may go on for many hours even days.
Update 13:50 UTC : A new picture of the damage in the village of Drimea, very close to the epicenter

Update 10:23 UTC : More minor damage to houses is reported from other villages close to the epicenter, where also rockfalls and power outages occurred.
Update 10:17 UTC : One old house in the village Drimea, 8 km west of the epicenter, collapsed (Maybe a second in Amifikleia). Another building in Thermopylen, a village near Lamia, was hit by a fallen rock. No injuries are reported so far.
Update 10:01 UTC : In Amfikleia, a town approx. 10 km south of the epicenter, collapsed chimneys and cracked walls were observed.
Update 09:57 UTC : The Police Department of Lamia reported rockfall in the hills near the epicenter. No damage to buildings is currently reported.
Update 09:43 UTC : Below the seismogram from this earthquake(s) on the Aspirathos, Naxos seismograph. Image courtesy Geofon Germany.
Update 09:37 UTC : Based on new data from the Greece Institute of Geodynamics the outcome is much more harmless. The depth being reported at 17 km and the Magnitude at 5.1 puts a totally different and harmless light on this earthquake.
Small damage like cracks in walls, fallen plaster and tiles are still possible, but we do not expect anything serious.
Update 09:27 UTC : Earthquake-report.com calls this earthquake very dangerous for damage (less for injuries) based on the current seismological data. The fact that the epicenter area is likely a farm fields area is adding to our fear.
Update 09:22 UTC : the different seismological agencies are reporting preliminary different Magnitudes.
Double earthquake or a foreshock and a mainshock in Greece.

Very Strong earthquake to the South of Crete, Greece
Last update: June 15, 2013 at 11:09 pm by By Ashish Khanal
Update 16:58 UTC : The origin of the accumulated stress of this earthquake comes from the subduction fault to the south of the island. The red line on the map below.
Update 16:54 UTC : The image below shows the shaking strength of this earthquake. Only a light shaking is expected by USGS (they have reported a Mw6.2 Magnitude) on Crete and may have been felt by 592,000 people (probably without counting the many tourists).
Update 16:51 UTC : The first few minutes after the earthquake there were glitches in electronic devices and the Internet
Update 16:45 UTC : The closest distance from the epicenter to the coastal I Have Felt It reports we have received is 115 km, which is a safe distance for this kind of earthquakes.
Update 16:43 UTC : This earthquake was also felt in the North African countries bordering the Mediterranean Sea like Egypt, etc.
Update 16:39 UTC : Based on the preliminary information that we have at the moment, we are almost certain that this earthquake will NOT generate damage or injuries + we do NOT expect a tsunami at these Magnitudes.
When you are one of the people who experienced this earthquake, please fill in the form behind “I Felt A (not Listed) Earthquake”. Thank you.
Update 16:37 UTC : The seismogram shows also some aftershocks. These will continue the following hours and days but will (normally, not always) getting weaker gradually.
Update 16:36 UTC : We are in the tourist season in Greece at the moment. For many tourists such an event is something extraordinary, which it is of course. Please read our BE PREPARED FOR AN EARTHQUAKE while residing on the island.
Update 16:33 UTC : This is how this earthquake was recorded by the GEOFON seismograph located at the south of Crete Island
Update 16:26 UTC : Earthquakes are occurring often in this area where 1 plate subducts the other. The accumulated stress that gets too big triggers the earthquake.
The Magnitude is reported differently by the seismological agencies. Geofon (Germany) reports a Magnitude of M6.0 and EMSC M5.5, both preliminary of course.
Moderately dangerous earthquake in Greece also felt in Bulgaria

Update 15:06 UTC : Epicenter below the Lerissos peninsula. Minor damage cannot be excluded as the hypocenter of this earthquake was very shallow and as the epicenter (if correct) is almost below a village with a population of +1000 inhabitants..
Update 14:56 UTC : As a reader reported us a little while ago, the shaking lasted for nearly a minute and thats a long time for a moderate earthquake like this.
The shaking in Bulgaria is related to the earthquake below which has an epicenter in Greece
