Moderate earthquake in the France Pyrenees (below Lourdes and close to Tarbes)
Last update: April 29, 2014 at 12:55 pm by By Armand Vervaeck
Update : For the people living in France, take a look at the Historic earthquake list below this link. France has hundreds of years ago been struck by a couple of devastating earthquakes!
Update 08:34 UTC : The French press is treating this earthquake as a “faits divers” . Hardly any updates are given in the local press. We will continue searching for additional information however as we think that besides power cuts people may report some slight damage.
Update 08:07 UTC : Argelès-Gazost until Val d’Azun have lost power this morning. The earthquake was felt until Toulouse (as we mentioned earlier).
Nos excuses pour la qualité du moteur de traduction automatique de Google – On sait que ca semble a rien, mais on pense que c’est mieux que rien du tout.
Update 07:59 UTC : The strongest earthquake in the greater epicenter area was a M5.7 earthquake to the south of the current epicenter and just across the Spain border. It happened in 1904! (see bottom map)
Update 07:55 UTC : No news so far from Lourdes, the sanctuary where thousands of people gather daily to pray for the holy Mary. We do not expect anything serious but slight damage is always possible. We have to add however that this area has relar earthquakes like today’s (mostly they are not exceeding M4 however).
Update : Power was down in some areas. The map below shows the shaking intensity. We expect at least some slight damage in a radius of 20 km around the epicenter, which includes Lourdes
Update : Magnitude est augmenté a M4.7! (Increase in Magnitude to M4.7 n- slight damage like cracks in walls, fallen tiles etc is likely)
Update : Premieres informations : epicentre aux Pyrenées Magnitude 4.0 Profondeur 2 km – Des légères dégats sont possible

Update 17:35 UTC : And to complete the story we add a video from CBC where a meteorologist/seismologist explains exactly the same what we have reiterated soon after the earthquake struck :
Update 14:55 UTC : The seismogram from this earthquake as it was registered at a station in Oregon.
Update 14:15 UTC : The aftershocks so far :
Update 13:28 UTC : A video roundup (compilation) which we like a lot
Update 09:33 UTC : Lower Mainland videos as compilated by Gloalnews Canada. Nothing spectacular, but some swaying of chandeliers.
Update 09:25 UTC : Pat Quealey from Emergency Management B.C. said they are hearing there may be some minor damage, but no significant damage. However, they are checking into reports that a First Nations lodge may have shifted on its foundations during the earthquake.
Update 05:03 UTC : A word of “Thank You” to all those people who have felt this earthquake and have reported what they have felt to this site. We (the people behind earthquake-report.com) and our many readers from all over the world are really appreciating your contributions. Together we make the best report in the world!
Update 04:38 UTC : The graphic below gives an overview of the historic earthquakes in the greater epicenter area (courtesy British Columbia Institute of Technology)
+
On October 28 2012 a Massive (much stronger than today) Magnitude 7.7 earthquake struck along the Queen Charlotte sound. Click here to read our in-depth article of this earthquake.
Update 04:30 UTC : USGS has now decreased the Magnitude by one point to M6.6 (initially M6.7). Recalculations of Magnitudes are a normal aspect of earthquakes (very complicated science). The main movement should have been a North-West to South-East (see beachball below)
Update 04:23 UTC : The map below shows the tectonic plates in the greater epicenter area. The star represents the epicenter below the North American plate. Very strong to even massive earthquakes are not uncommon here due to the strong movement of the plates. Left plate : the Pacific plate – Right plate : North American continental plate – South plate : Explorer plate – The area has really complicated tectonics partly with all kings of faulting along the different tectonic plates.
Update 04:15 UTC : Max Wyss theoretical damage engine does not expect any injuries or fatalities from this earthquake. Always nice to see our expectations confirmed
Update 04:06 UTC : Every experience report we receive from Canadians has also an MMI shaking intensity value as it was perceived by the reporting people. This tels us a maximum average light shaking (MMI IV) which would not lead to any damage. A report from Port Hardy (close to the epicenter) is confirming this.
Update 04:06 UTC : In downtown Vancouver some residents in high rises buildings said they felt their building or chandeliers sway.
Update 04:02 UTC : Historical seismicity map for area around Vancouver Island M6.6 strike-slip quake (courtesy Jascha Polet). The historical Faulting Mechanism map shows mainly a horizontal strike/slip mechanism in the area. Earthquakes are occurring at both sides of the subduction zone.
Update 03:56 UTC : Residents in Port Hardy said the ground shook for about 35 to 40 seconds. The I Have Felt It map below shows only weak to very weak shaking on Vancouver Island.
Update 03:54 UTC : Most reports we are seeing right now are telling fallen objects in houses, nothing seriously. Groceries were knocked off the shelves at the local Overwaitea store. People are saying they felt it as far away as Langley and Kelowna. People are also reporting that the shaking lasted about 20 to 30 seconds.
Update 03:52 UTC : We notice multiple moderate to strong aftershocks in the epicenter area
Update 03:49 UTC : The same area was hit by a M6.9 earthquake in 1918. That earthquake was a little to the South East and below land. The epicenter of this earthquake is on top of the subduction zoner where the Pacific plate subducts the North American plate.
Update : Initial Focal Mechanism of the earthquake as reported by Jascha Polet, seismologist. The beachball shows a strike/slip mechanism (mainly horizontal movement). This was also the case in most historic earthquakes in the area.
Update : The strongest shaking as perceived by people along the Vancouver Island coast should be MMI V or moderate shaking.

Moderate extremely shallow earthquake near Pivka, Slovenia (also felt in Italy and Croatia)
Last update: April 22, 2014 at 10:43 am by By Armand Vervaeck
Update 10:39 UTC : Local media are reporting some cracks in walls of older buildings.
Update 09:58 UTC : a number of aftershocks have been registered although the strength was not strong enough to be felt by the people.
– The Pivka elementary school was evacuated.
– The Fire Brigade at Pivka has not yet received any emergency calls. Evacutaion at Pivka took place because of the perceived strong shaking at the 2th and 3th floor of the school. Other schools in the area did also evacuate.
Update 09:53 UTC : The strongest earthquake in the area since 1900 was a 1926 M5.7 earthquake with epicenter near Postojna, Slovenia
Update 09:23 UTC : Landscape near the epicenter shows us that slight damage is possible (farm fields). No reports of damage as yet.
Moderate but extremely shallow earthquake with epicenter in Slovenia.
Due to the extremely shallow character of this earthquake, slight damage like cracks in walls, fallen tiles etc cannot be excluded.
Especially the villages as shown on this map may have some slight damage if the current preliminary information is confirmed.

Last update: April 11, 2014 at 4:06 pm by By Armand Vervaeck
11.04.2014 15:07 UTC: More than 1500 houses were damaged. The most affected towns are Nagarote (~ 700 houses) and Managua (~ 550 houses). Many dozend people in Managua were displaced.
11.04.2014 08:10 UTC: 266 injured was stated by SINAPRED, the disaster management agency of the Nicaraguan government. A red alert has been called.
11.04.2014 08:06 UTC: Scattered reports of 266 injured people are coming through, however we are checking the original source before stating this as an actual number.
11.04.2014 07:51 UTC: 1 death has been reported in addition to 33 injuries (3 serious).
822 houses are damaged or destroyed according to latest reports meaning around 1500 people are likely homeless.
This quake was located approx. 50 km north of Managua. More than 100 houses were damaged, some of them collapsed. The most affected areas are the town Naragore (Leon Region) and surrounding villages. Damage (mainly minor) was also caused in Managua, where a landslide buried two roads. 3 people were injured by falling debris there, and many more altogether in Nicaragua, many more had to be evacuated, fearing additional earthquakes. Affected by evacuations is a hospital in Leon, where the quake caused cracks in plaster.
Power and water supply is interrupted in some areas.
Six aftershocks larger than M 5 occurred so far.

7.04.2014- 20:27GMT The epicenter is around the lake of Serre-Poncon. No damage has been reported from the French Riviera. It is likely that there will be a few minor aftershocks with a magnitude 5, and there is always a very minor chance that this is a precursor event. The largest historic earthquake was in 1909 killing around 46 people and causing the equivalent of 2 billion Euros damage by today’s estimates.
7.04.2014- 20:25GMT Being underneath the mountains, there is a slight chance of landslides and also a slight chance that some mountain villages will have damage. Barcellonette has reported minor damage already (a small town.)
7.04.2014- 20:15GMT A moderate shallow earthquake has hit the south of France. There is a chance of damage given the depth. It is unlikely much will be discovered tonight.

Update 13:41 UTC : So far, nobody reported some damage (probably due to the very brief shaking). The LA METRO reports : Due to an earthquake, there will be minor delays on all Metro Rail lines while we inspect tracks and equipment. Update to follow.
Update 13:41 UTC : USGS has lowered his initial Magnitude from 4.7 to 4.4. This together with the reports that the shaking was very brief is changing our exception into a mainly harmless earthquake. Slight damage like cracks in walls, a few broken window and fallen objects and tiles are always possible. Fire trucks and ambulances have been heard after the quake, but this may have been only precautionary.
Update 13:40 UTC : Jascha Polet reported : reverse faulting with strike-slip component at depth of 8 km

Update 14:45 UTC : Several buildings in El Tocuyo, among them at least one hospital, suffered minor damage. Some public buildings, mainly schools, were temporarily closed. So far no reports of injuries.
Update 11:27 UTC : Funvisis has changed his earthquake data into M5.2 at 3.4 km = still extremely shallow and extremely dangerous for serious damage.
Update 11:23 UTC : First earthquake reports are mentioning a M5.5 at 10 km. Funvisis, the local seismological agency, is reporting a M5.8 t a very shallow depth. If this is confirmed, we call this earthquake “extremely dangerous” for serious damage and/or injuries as the epicenter area is relatively populated.
