People along the East Coast weren’t the only ones to feel the 5.8-magnitude earthquake Tuesday, as zoo animals in Washington, D.C., let it be known they felt the vibrations, zoo officials said.

Some of the animals at the Smithsonian’s National Zoological Park even shouted alarm calls or ran up trees seconds before the rest of us felt the shaking.

About 5 to 10 seconds before Tuesday’s quake, an orangutan named Kyle and a Western lowland gorilla named Kojo, abandoned their food and climbed to the top of the treelike structure in the Ape House exhibit.

The magnitude 7.0 earthquake in northern Peru today (Aug. 24) was the third major temblor to shake the Americas in less than 48 hours. A magnitude 5.8 quake hit Virginia yesterday, and a magnitude 5.3 event rumbled under Colorado the day before.

One might naturally wonder if there’s a trend here — if the Peru, Colorado andVirginia earthquakes are connected. But experts say there isn’t, and they aren’t.

“The question comes up all the time,” said David Schwartz, an earthquake geologist with the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), “but these three earthquakes are completely unrelated.”

Northern California Quakes

California Earthquakes: Twin Shocks Jolt Nothern California

08/24/11 09:04 AM ET   AP

MAMMOTH LAKES, Calif. — While the East Coast recovers from earthquake jitters, small quakes have been rocking California.

The U.S. Geological Survey says in a computer-generated report that the latest was a magnitude-4.4 quake that struck at 4:59 a.m. Wednesday about nine miles southeast of Mammoth Lakes.

A Mono County sheriff’s dispatcher who didn’t give her name says there were a couple of “just wondering” calls but no reports of damage.

There was a magnitude-3.6 quake centered six miles southeast of Oakland at 11:36 p.m. Tuesday.

That shaker was felt by people throughout the San Francisco Bay area, but there are no reports of damage.

Vancouver Earthquake

Greater Vancouver area gets a wake-up call for earthquake preparedness

Last update: August 13, 2011 at 1:43 pm by By Armand Vervaeck and James Daniell

Earthquake overview : In the late evening of August 11, a weak earthquake with a magnitude of 3.3 was sending a emotional vibration through parts of British Colombia. The earthquake was too weak to create any damage or injuries, but the sensation of feeling an earthquake, tells the people to be ready if a major one would arrive. (Data and Felt Reports at the lower half of this page)

Where the earthquake comes from
Although the distance from thesubduction fault in front of the coastto the epicenter is at least 450 km and although 90% of the earthquakes are occurring below the sea bottom in the immediate subduction fault area, the map below shows also some major earthquakes at several hundred km to the east of the fault line. The map at right shows the risk levels for the greater Vancouver area. Today’s earthquake occurred in the yellow lower risk zone ! The more you go to the west the higher the risk for a future serious earthquake at a major magnitude.

Earth Update fr/Aquarian Solutions

Site Last Updated August 11, 2011: We have passed the mega energized Mid-Point of the Mayan 5th Day
and today with Galactic Tone 13 it is a time of ascension as the earth is awakening big time .
The deeply primal energies of the Mars-Pluto opposition are separating and have triggered major earth changes .
Volcanic activity is starting Southern Hemisphere with Java and Coral Sea plumes to Ascension Island
to the Canary Island magma plume in the Northern Hemisphere along with Mt. Etna and now Undersea off Oregon along with the Cleveland volcano in Alaska

Magma plume report: A barometer of the planet indicates earthchanges are accelerating

Deep recycling in the Earth faster than thought
The most frequent question I’m asked is how much time do we have left before something major occurs? Not long, as you’ll shortly see. I included this map in my book so everyone could know that magma plumes are the planet’s geologic thermal dissipative features and as such, they are an early-warning sign that entropic processes are accelerating and magma levels are rising uniformly across the planet. Let’s start with Indonesia’s 18 volcanoes that are now on alert and showing above-normal activity- Because of the Java and Coral Sea plumes, we can expect growing unrest from the Merapi Sundoro Dieng volcanic complex, the Taboro, the Gunung Ranakah and Sirung volcanic complex which comprises about 28 volcanic cones.

Just after midnight local time a moderate earthquake struck below the sea-floor of the triangle St. Lucia, Martinique and Barbados.
Based on the first I Have Felt It reports from the area, this earthquake has been felt as a “light shaking” (MMI IV) in Saint Lucia and as a weak shaking (MMI III)  in Martinique, Barbados and Saint Vincent and the Grenadines.
The distance from the epicenter (in between Saint Lucia and Barbados) to the nearest populated island is too big to generate any damage or injuries.
