Gulf of California Earthquakes 4/12: Update
2 very strong dangerous earthquakes in the Gulf of California – Minor damage reported in Guaymas
Last update: April 13, 2012 at 9:58 am by By Armand Vervaeck and James Daniell
Most important Earthquake Data:
Magnitude : 6.8-6.9
UTC Time : Thursday, April 12, 2012 at 07:15:48 UTC
Local time at epicenter : Thursday, April 12, 2012 at 12:15:48 AM at epicenter
Depth (Hypocenter) : 10.3 km
Geo-location(s) :
134 km (83 miles) NE (48°) from Guerrero Negro, Baja California Sur, Mexico
162 km (101 miles) W (268°) from La Doce, Sonora, Mexico
Update 13/04 – 09:54 UTC
The staff of Civil Protection, Urban Infrastructure and SIUE (Ministry of Urban Infrastructure and Ecology) is conducting currently an inspection in the Guaymas area.
The local head of Civil Protection, Leon Gerardo Soto reported that home owners in the greater Guaymas area have calles the Civil Protection to report damage on their houses.
Regarding the City Hall (Palacio Municipal), he said that new cracks were found at the main entrance.
Update 21:12 UTC
* Cracks on walls in Guaymas,Sonora : People were calling newspapers and local media to reportdamages in their houses. El Palacio Municipal (Municipal Palace ,local government building) reported cracks on the principal entrance.
* Mexican Proteccion Civil has evacuated people from the beach as a precautionary measure
– Update 17:17 UTC
* At least 60 Americans have asked their touring companies to be transferred away from their vacation location at Bahía de Kino.
* Proteccion Civil Mexico has reported that they have had NO reports of damage or injuries in Guerrero Negro. One of the main reasons that this earthquake will have been harmless may have been the short duration of the shaking (10 seconds in Hermosilla)
– An ER reader living in Tucson, Arizona (USA) mentioned having felt the earthquake !
– Since the mainshock, the earthquake area has been hit by 6 aftershocks varying in strength in between M3.7 and M4.8.
– The earthquake was felt strongly. There have been 2 confirmed reports in San Luis of a VI intensity (72km from the epicenter). This means that there is the potential for VII-VIII in the epicentral area (damaging). (we are choosing to ignore a response of VII, which came 354km from the epicenter).
– Historic damaging earthquakes of similar magnitude have occurred once in the epicentral region with a M7.0 earthquake in 1954 causing no deaths and minor damage. This is a good sign for the region affected.
– Looking at the epicentral area – the location is very sparsely populated with only a few houses along the coastline apart from Santa Isabel.
– Mexican hypocenter (UNAM) is at M6.8 and 10km depth, under land.
– USGS hypocenter is at M6.9 and off the coast – there is little chance of a tsunami due to the fault mechanism.
– The area around Santa Isabel is most at risk from the USGS-based hypocenter with a possible shaking of VII. Some damage should be expected. Currently Agua de Soda and other towns closeby near the national park of Baja California are most at risk from the Mexican hypocenter which is below land.
– The Mexican Civil Defense who is responsible for Search and Rescue and first aid has reported that so far NO damage or injuries has been recorded.
– Based on the Geofon data both earthquakes were strike-slip earthquakes (mainly lateral movement).
– The average shaking recorded in Hermosilla is MMI IV (based on 84 reports). The shaking in Guerrero Negro is MMI V (moderate). Hermosillo is 10. km from the epicenter and Guerrero Negro 133 km. As explained before our attention goes to the immediate area of the epicenter (very shallow earthquake) – 30 to 40 km radius is at risk for eventual damage. Whether there will be damage or not will depend on how long both shakings have lasted and on the final earthquake data numbers.
– As the earthquake struck in a coastal area, NOAA has written in his latest report (for USA people mainly) : A strong earthquake has occurred, but a tsunami IS NOT expected along the California, Oregon, Washington, British Columbia, or Alaska coast. NO tsunami warning, watch or advisory is in effect for these areas. Based on the earthquake magnitude, location and historic tsunami records, a damaging tsunami IS NOT expected along the California, Oregon, Washington, British Columbia, and Alaska coasts.
– So far we have no news of the epicentral area.
– The earthquake happened just after midnight. Mexican news channels haven’t picked up the news yet. Of course it is in the middle of the night in Mexico and people seem to have been used to the many earthquakes of the last 24 hours.
– The set of earthquakes in the Gulf of California have started with a M4.7 earthquake, followed 18 minutes later by a M6.2 earthquake and another 9 minutes later with a M6.9 earthquake (the most powerful so far)
– USGS has calculated that 3000 people will have experienced a very strong shaking and that 105,000 have experienced a strong shaking. Both these areas are at risk for eventual damage, especially because 9 minutes earlier another very strong earthquake struck the same area.
– The Mexican Servico Sismologico Nacional reports a magnitude of 6.8 with an epicenter below land. These makes this earthquake the most dangerous in 24 hours !
– Although it is a ridge earthquake, the epicenter of the M6.9 quake looks to be very close to the coast which makes this earthquake (the second very strong in a matter of 9 minutes) EXTREMELY DANGEROUS for shaking damage and fatalities. Let us hope that we are too pessimistic here. The kind of shaking will depend on the focal mechanism
– Following calculations by the USGS (providing that the earthquake data are correct) a MMI VII will have been experienced on the Baja California peninsula ! This means dangerous for the coastal areas experiencing this kind of shaking.
– The whole North American continent is currently moving in such a way that the earthquakes of the last 12 hours are somehow related (Mexico Sur, Mexico Gulf of California, Utah, Oregon) . Scientists will have a lot of work in examining eventual relationships however there is no certainty at all that a relation would exist (at least for a couple of these earthquakes)
– We are talking in this case about a Ridge earthquake, this means 2 separating plates who are hanging and suddenly get away from each other. Ridge earthquakes are typical for Middle Ocean locations
– The earthquake struck just after midnight
– We are currently collecting data

El Hierro Update 3/30
El Hierro Volcano : Yellow alert – Salvamar Adhara spends a couple of hours above the vent “filming”
Last update: March 30, 2012 at 4:19 pm by By Armand Vervaeck
Camera used by SCIC for underwater filming
Update 30/03 – 15:42 UTC
– Joke was (of course) in the port at the return of the Salvamar Adhara who spend a couple of hours above the vent. Based on what we have seen in the past weeks and months, we know that if the Salvamar Adhara remains a while on the sea, it is not for water sampling only (takes very short time). Bathymetry was done yesterday by the BIO Hesperides, so bathymetry should be excluded too. So Joke asked Maria José Jurado, the CSIC representative on board, if she had worked with the floating video camera (it is a camera on a rope pulled by the Salvamar Adhara, not a ROV). She said yes, we did.
Joke continued asking Maria José about what she has seen on the camera. She said that she had some interesting material, but she had to analyze it further on. She also said, that when the quality would be good enough, CSIC will send it to the Gobierno de Canarias to publish the video.
Joke also asked : was there still some activity ? She said : Yes, we still see some gases coming out of the vent. Joke continued asking : also gases at the surface ? She said : NO.
We will publish Joke’s images from the boat, spectators, camera on board, a few jelly fish in a while.
ER comment : nothing new here of course, at least nothing which surprises us. The jacuzzis we have seen for many days in a row are absolute signs of further degassing. The main question remains, is there still lava coming out of the vent. The last time we know for sure that that was the case was on March 14 when the ULPGC ROV made a video recording of it. The latest bathymetry data from CSIC did tell us that the cone was at 88 meter. But this depth was measured at the end of February ! All frequent El Hierro eruption followers have 1 major question. How deep is the crater rim at this moment ? Is it a coincidence that the Salvamar Adhara starts filming again 1 day after that the BIO Hesperides measured the depth of the Las Calmas sea floor or cone ? Probably yes or probably not. At least we know that fresh erupted lava was seen by the ULPGC ROV on March 14, and there are NO indications that this pattern has changed since then. Does this mean that the depth will be less ? Not necessarily. Let us all hope that the results will be published soon in the website of the Gobierno de Canarias.
Update 30/03 – 09:59 UTC
– Joke told us that the Salvamar Adhara has just been spotted at the main vent, probably taking water samples
– On Jokes images (click on the thumbnails below), the main vent can well be seen as well as a far bigger colored area. There is doubt whether this is current coloring or a stain. We go for the stain.
Update 30/03 – 09:59 UTC
– Joke just send us a morning report. When walking down the lave fields to La Restinga, she stumbled in a AA lava field (thick sharp lava flowing out of a crater at a slow speed) but fell luckily in a lapilli field (small volcanic stones falling out of the sky during an eruption – more or less like thick ash). It is a little painful but everything is still functioning (including her cameras)
– While driving down with the bus this morning, Joke saw a jacuzzi, but in the meantime he disappeared again
– Joke told us that she saw technicians at the webcam mast ! Let’s hope that they will leave the webcams untouched as we will never see them again in time if necessary ! As politics are against any further “bad news”, we have no hope at all that they will reactivate the webcam.
– 1 earthquake since midnight.
– continuing microseismicity
– NO change in horizontal GPS deformation
Update 29/03 – 22:20 UTC
Julio del Castillo Vivero has created a fantastic high resolution panoramic image with 60 images from Joke Volta ! (they regularly share their work). The result El Hierro as a color palette
Picture info : 180 meters above sea level – Taken today (29th March) – Mountain Dácila – Finca José Pérez, locals call it Montaña La Restinga
Update 29/03 – 21:20 UTC
– The BIO (Buque de Investigación Oceanográfica) has made a short bathymetry mission stop at El Hierro today during his return trip from Antarctica. Spain has an Antarctica base and during the months November to February, the Antarctic peninsula is merely ice free.
– And to make the day complete, here are the beautiful evening images of Joke Volta
Update 29/03 – 21:04 UTC
– The Spanish Army is really good in public relations. IGN needs to take an example on them. In a press report on the Armada Española website this evening, the bathymetry mission was highlighted.
“El buque ha realizado varias líneas de prospección en una cuadrícula de trabajo situada en las coordenadas: 27º 40´N // 27º 30´N de latitud y 18º 05´W // 17º 55´W de longitud, para determinar el punto de mayor altura del edificio volcánico y comprobar posibles variaciones desde el último levantamiento batimétrico.”
Human translation : The vessel has done several rectangle routes under the coordinates : 27º 40´N // 27º 30´N de latitude y 18º 05´W // 17º 55´W longitude to determine the highest point of the volcano and check any possible changes since last bathymetry.

Large Plume Eruptions in South & Midwest 3/26
This is fr/Dutch Sinse
Make your own conclusions. Just strange stuff. Not sure I am always seeing what he is seeing.
Dozens of plumes erupt – 10 states at the same time -1815UTC / 215pm CDT on March 26 2012
watch the video here:
———————————————-
A series of coinciding eruptive events .. dozens of plumes.. all appear / erupt at the same time … 1815 UTC / 215CDT on 3/26/2012 .. Viewable throughout the south, midwest, and southwest USA — Texas, Oklahoma, Missouri, Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, Florida, South Carolina, and North Carolina… possibly more that I did not cover in this video .
The chances of having THIS MANY WILDFIRES pop up at once sometime right before 215pm CDT — these chances are astronomical if not on the edge of borderline IMPOSSIBLE (imo)……
Approx plume locations in Arkansas : 34°45’6.81″N , 94°11’0.39″W
35°35’56.03″N , 93°26’56.25″W
34°37’6.85″N , 93°41’3.64″W
34°59’14.25″N , 93°12’37.80″W
35°10’37.07″N , 93°35’56.10″W
approx plume locations in missouri :
37° 5’34.58″N , 91°11’30.85″W
36°54’29.07″N , 91° 6’46.49″W
approx plume locations in oklahoma :
36°22’42.98″N , 94°57’6.55″W
34° 7’25.90″N , 94°56’56.67″W
approx plume locations in texas:
33°47’4.99″N , 95°56’28.75″W
There are MANY more in Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina, and North Carolina.
The way to find the plume epicenter is simple, using college of dupage — turn on the “county map overlay”.. then pause the image as you see the plumes erupt.. then using google earth http://earth.google.com .. match up the areas using the county lines as marks from which to measure the approximate origin point of the plumes.
Be aware of a possible earthquake ramification for this event.
I’m sure you’ve heard of the recent “rumble” and “underground explosion” reports around the USA… Wisconsin and Georgia are two examples… I think these events may actually all be related.
Personally, first hand account from my wife and I… yesterday (3/26/2012).. we felt several “rumbles” on the south side of Saint Louis Missouri… especially this afternoon. NOT a jet… clearly from the ground only… made a few things shake. I checked the charts and NOTHING showed at the CERI/SLU helicorder located at St. Louis University in downtown StL.
Did we “feel” the eruption of the event in southeast missouri today? I’m waiting to see if others report anything similar.. but the times sure match.
To see the other events and proof for their craton / volcanic / deep earth origin.. here is a link below:
Seen on college of dupage GOES visible satellite view — 2km or 1km Visibile — link is here:
you can still view it real time here as of 1211am CDT 3/27/2012 :http://weather.cod.edu/satrad/index.php
back dated GOES satellite images can be viewed here if the above is no longer available:
El Hierro Update
El Hierro Volcano : Yellow alert – Atlantic Explorer will try to use the ROV on Tuesday
Last update: March 12, 2012 at 3:19 pm by By Armand Vervaeck
Update 12/03 – 07:28
– The Atlantic Explorer vessel of the company QSTAR SLU, hired by members of ‘Universidad de las Palmas de Gran Canaria’ (ULPGC) and collaborating, the non-profit organisation, SOS Océanos is back in town. Julio received an Email from one of the people in charge that they will try to use the ROV today on Tuesday, weather permitting of course.
– 2 earthquakes so far today – M &.1 and M 1.3 both at a depth of 12 km
Update 11/03 – 23:55
– New images from Joke Volta have been loaded in our picasaweb
– A 5th earthquake with a magnitude of 0.6 occurred at 21:37
Update 11/03 – 22:58
– no more new earthquakes
– some people are looking for a new name for the new volcano. IGN scientists are talking internally about “El Volcan de La Restinga” but a new name is certainly desirable.
– Involcan and ITER have published the new CO2 graphs who are showing a light increase to 934 ton per day.
Update 11/03 – 21:34 UTC
– Today a number of people and Joke saw a faint jacuzzi or rather degassing in the vent area. This was also confirmed by scientists.
– The degassing started already yesterday afternoon and was mentioned by some ER readers, Julio and AVCAN.
– We think it is probably too early to talk about a reactivation of the eruptive process.
Update 11/03 – 18:38 UTC
– Images Joke Volta from today showing a beautiful sunrise and a few images with a super faint jacuzzi. Click here.
Update 11/03 – 08:38 UTC
– 4 earthquakes so far since midnight. Resp. 1.8, 1.5, 0.3 and 1.7. Depths in between 8 and 12 km.
Update 10/03 – 23:10 UTC
– The Atlantic Explorer vessel is currently navigating to El Hierro for a new campaign. In the team, members from the Universidad de Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and SOS Océanos. Lets hope this time the conditions will be good enough for deploying the ROV.
Update 10/03 – 21:45 UTC
– The following video shows the activity at ‘El Mar de Las Calmas’ from 18:55 to 19:55 UTC x10 normal speed, by Julio del Castillo Vivero.
– AVCAN (Actualidad Volcánica de Canarias) believe the eruption was not over and continues.
– Joke Volta has spoken with Ramón Ortiz and here we have translate his words for what he believes could be happening:
” What can be observed now we saw 2 weeks ago. I have looked at the seismic network, and there has been no variation, no anomalies. When there is an eruptive activity this is reflected in the seismic network. What could be happening is that as magma is still hot, it takes time to cool down, this material is still releasing heat and vapor, and there is still gas release. That is why there is still an exclusion zone around the volcano. Tides can affect the process that we see. As the tide changes, the pressure does too and this can alter what is happening. The effect of the tides we have observed it two weeks ago when there was a decrease in activity. The visibility of the volcano changes and this is also due to the tides.
– What we are sure of is there has been no official communication about what is happening.

Solar Storms & Earthquake Connections
Strong Geomagnetic storm hits late, earthquake prone areas should keep alert
Published on March 9, 2012 – 16:00 UT – By TWS Staff Reporter – Edited by Staff Editor |
Another piece of the earthquake trigger puzzle is the work done by TheWeatherSpace.com Senior Meteorologist Kevin Martin. Martin has been bashed at by others in the weather field, media outlets, and even Tony Phillips at SpaceWeather. Martin has been working on his theory of how solar storms may be a trigger to earthquakes since before the year 2000. According to online records, Martin was once known as “Geomagnetic Man”, in-which he was predicting quake windows like fellow predictor Berkland.(TheWeatherSpace.com) – Two theories floating around have come together to question what is next. As the Full Moon goes and the Solar Storm remains or fades, two people are wondering what will happen next.
Geologist Jim Berkland is the founder and developer of the theory involving earthquakes and the moon positions. According to Berkland, his Earthquake window this month was March 8th through the 15th, issued on March 8th. His theory is based on Syzygy, which is a twice-monthly alignment of the Sun and the Moon, from new to full.
No records before-hand show the work being done. Martin is the founder and developer of the theory that solar storms and geomagnetic storms may trigger earthquakes. Dr. Tony Phillips last year finally was starting to agree on what Martin has been saying for over 12 years now and more people should be aware of the trigger.
“Oh I get laughed at a lot but down the line the joke is always on them,” said Martin. “I think outside of the box, something not many want to do today. The generation of today’s youth and world is laziness and Xbox. Back in 1998 is when I started working on my theory, which I still believe in today to be a trigger.”
At the current time only a magnitude 7.1 was registered in the Southern Pacific, northeast of Australia. Coincidentally it happened when the geomagnetic storm arrived. The area of the quake is prone to large quakes, but last year a solar storm hit the planet and Japan had the devastating earthquake right as it hit.
Right now the geomagnetic levels are dropping after a peak of 7 on the 1 through 9 scale. This went well with what Martin had said on TWS’ official Facebook page on Thursday morning when Dr. Tony Phillips had declared the storm “a dud”.
“What matters is how much energy is being trapped up there in the geomagnetic field of the Earth, and when the Bz goes south, these particles will find a “Crack” so to speak and filter downwards,” said Martin. ” This can happen either right after impact or within 6-18 hours after the initial impact. Also the impact could come in waves throughout the day.”
Martin states that the trigger window is still open 24 hours after the storm finishes. Earthquakes hit without notice but it can still be a good idea to be ‘On-Watch’ and alert when triggers are elevated.

Dulce, New Mexico, the mysterious “earthquakes” of 1966 and 1967 and Project Gasbuggy
from Norio Hayakawa at: Civilian Intelligence Central
E-mail = noriohayakawa@gmail.com
January 10, 2012:
Dulce, New Mexico, the mysterious “earthquakes” of 1966 and 1967 and Project Gasbuggy
Here is a fascinating report which was posted several years ago on the Internet by an anonymous researcher who only went by the name of Firefoot:
http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?ie=UTF&msa=0&msid=113796814867830262616.0004510b49d1517768f16
This researcher, Firefoot, apparently studied the earthquake epicenters in and around Dulce from January 23, 1966 to December 10, 1967. Apparently unusual “earthquakes” were occuring in these areas nearly a year before Project Gasbuggy took place on December 10, 1967!!
(December 10, 1967 was when the U.S. exploded a nuclear device a mile and a half underground, about 22 miles southwest of Dulce, New Mexico…..it was called Project Gasbuggy and was explained by the U.S. Government as an experiment that would help ease the flow of natural gas trapped under hard, tuffa rocks in the entire region……it was an explosion of 30 megaton bomb, which caused a 5.10 magnitude earthquake in the area, extending all the way to Farmington).
This anonymous researcher, Firefoot, covered all known earthquake information from a point that extends 50km in every direction around the coordinates 37.052N, 106.907W.
He states that for some reason, 95% of the earthquakes occured between 1966 and 1967.
He states that it is possible that there was underground construction occuring.
He then made this map using the USGS/NEIC data.
As you go to his above link, he points out that Red “tacks” show coordinates where MULTIPLE earthquakes occured. Blue “tacks” show places where there was one earthquake only.
He made black grid lines to connect lines of more than TWO earthquakes which happened to happen along a meridian.
He says that the chances of there being so many lines of more than two earthquakes is statistically nil!!
The green and red lines show locations between places where multiple earthquakes occurred where they just happen to measure into perfect triangles. (As stated, lines of these two triangles are marked with green and read.)
“Very strange to say the least!” he says.
He believes explosives and RAND Corp digging machines were used.
But once again, I would like for you to go to the link for more fascinating information that I would like to point out. Please study the link very carefully again and since you can zoom in to any location within this google map/satellite imagery, please do so anytime:
(try to keep it in the satellite imagery mode, as much as possible)
http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?ie=UTF&msa=0&msid=113796814867830262616.0004510b49d1517768f16
MYSTERY SPOT 18 MILES NORTHEAST OF DULCE, NEW MEXICO:
In his explanation on the left side, he mentions three items of interest:
These three items are Purple “tacks”:
He describes one as a “hangar in the forest”, which is the northwestern point of the equilateral triangle. The equilateral triangle is indicated with purple color. If you zoom in, yes, you can definitely see an isolated building which definitely could be a hangar. This location is slightly south southeast of Pagosa Springs, Colorado.
Next he describes a “door in the mountain”. This is the eastern point of the equilateral triangle. What he calls a “door in the mountain” (if you zoom in) appears to be an anomalous spot…a strange area near atop a snow-capped peak (the researcher calls this peak Navajo Peak, and is located about 8 miles northeast of the town of Chromo, Colorado. The anomalous spot (which superficially looks somewhat like a lake) certainly doesn’t fit in because the rest of the area is snow-covered.
(In late 2008 I was contacted by a Los Alamos scientist who first pointed this to me when he visited my home)
Lastly, the researcher, Firefoot, describes an “arrow at Dulce”. This location is at the southern point of the equilateral triangle. If you zoom in, you can clearly tell that it is a building located in the southern area of Dulce. Actually, it is the Dulce Elementary School, located right next to the Stone Lake Road.
If you zoom in, you can clearly see that the arrow is seen on the strangely-configured circular driveway of the school. This is now known among some researchers as the Dulce Arrow.
(Again, in late 2008, the very same Los Alamos scientist who visited me pointed this out to me)
What is most interesting is that from the Arrow of the circular driveway of Dulce Elementary School to the anomalous point on Navajo Peak in Colorado is exactly 18 miles.
And, from the anomalous area high atop the snow-capped Navajo Peak in Colorado to the “hangar” south of Pagosa Springs, is also exactly 18 miles.
And, from the “hangar” south of Pagosa Springs to the circular driveway of Dulce Elementary School is also exactly 18 miles!!
The last three items (i.e., “the door in the mountain”, “the Dulce arrow” and “hangar in the forest”) are summarized in this YouTube piece:
MYSTERY SPOT 18 MILES NORTHEAST OF DULCE, NEW MEXICO:

El Hierro Update
El Hierro Volcano : Yellow-Red alert – 7 earthquakes since midnight + test video ROV “Wally”
Last update: February 21, 2012 at 1:37 pm by By Armand Vervaeck
This is the most recent El Hierro Volcano eruption report
Update 21/02 – 13:34 UTC
– As said yesterday, the Atlantic Explorer is carrying the ROV Sirio which was baptized “Wally“. Because of the weather conditions during the first mission, the ROV was unable to be set at work. While anchoring at La Restinga, the crew made a test with “Wally” in the port of La Restinga. Here is the result of this test. The image you see here is the image which you can expect when Wally would be able to dive to the volcano cone next week.
Update 21/02 – 11:53 UTC
– 7 earthquakes since midnight
– Joke Volta set of morning images
Update 21/02 – 09:46 UTC
– 6 earthquakes since midnight + continuing not listed weak earthquakes
– no visible jacuzzi or stain
– HT at minimum amplitude
– Another day of Geology course for Joke Volta and she enjoys learning about tectonics, volcano types, magma types, magma viscosity, historic events which can be seen at the island, etc etc. Based on what she told us yesterday, earthquake-report calls the geology course a 5-star course. Every important topic is discussed. An example : it is impossible to talk about volcanoes when Ocean ridges are not discussed. Ocean ridges were a part of the course on day 1.
This 3 day course was organized by the diving centers association and joined by partners like the University of La Laguna and the government of the Canary Islands, etc. The biggest part of the course is given by Ramon Casillas, a professor at the university of La Laguna. Javier Morales, member of the parliament, is also listed on the leaflet as a co-speaker.
Update 20/02 – 23:35 UTC
– we have stranded on 19 earthquakes today
– other interesting data : unchanged
Update 20/02 – 18:17 UTC
– unchanged situation : continuing micro-seismicity, listed earthquakes and minimal HT
– Jesus Machin, a fisherman at La Restinga has made a coastal walk along the Naos bay. He said to Joke that he has seen a lot of sardines. Sardines are common around this time of the year, but so many was a real surprise to him.
Update 20/02 – 11:10 UTC
– Joke is currently following a “geology” class in La Restinga ! . It is a free lecture with a focus on what is happening below the island. (click here to see the 5 pictures she has photographed this morning)
– It tends to be a shaky day in El Hierro as we have already 13 listed earthquakes so far.
– The picture below shows that the volcano is still emitting material in the sea (gray area). The picture dates from this morning
Update 20/02 – 08:13 UTC
– No visible stain or jacuzzi this morning
– Accordingly also almost no harmonic tremor
– Micro-seismicity continues to show the continuing magma pressure
– On top of the microseismicity, IGN has listed 8 earthquakes since midnight. All these earthquakes had magnitudes above M1. All the epicenters are or below the island (main crater system) or in the Las Calmas sea in between the main vent and Tacoron.

Earthquake Lists — USA by State
Armand Vervaeck and James Daniell have created a page for cataloging Earthquakes in the US.
These guys do an amazing job of reporting earthquakes and keeping things current relative to seismic events. Take a look:
United States real-time earthquake lists for each of the 50 US States

This page has been created to find out in real-time if an earthquake has been noticed by seismographs in or near the state you are living.
We have started to fill our database in January 2012. On top of the USGS notifications, we are also showing the earthquake details as published by other seismological sources in the world (only for the stronger earthquakes). We list all earthquakes greater than M 2.5 (as this is in average the level that people might feel an earthquake).
We hope that you will describe what you have felt, if an earthquake strikes near you. Your experience is of great interest to the scientific community as a whole.
2/8 El Hierro Update
El Hierro Volcano : Yellow-Red alert – Joke Volta images of tonight’s Smoking Lava Balloons
Last update: February 8, 2012 at 11:29 pm by By Armand Vervaeck
This is the most recent El Hierro Volcano eruption report
Update 08/02 – 23:18 UTC
Remember our update from 17:56 yesterday, when somebody of CAP told Joke that he had seen much stronger activity than usual in the Jacuzzi. ER reader Sissel has recorded the webcam at that time. The 4 minutes video shows the more intense activity. The activity occurred when we lived through 5 minutes of the most powerful HT since many days. The graph can be seen at the end of the recording.
Update 08/02 – 21:11 UTC
For the interested people : Etna is erupting right now ! (Thank you Nataly for telling us)
http://www.guide-etna.com/webcam/
Update 08/02 – 20:33 UTC
– There have been 3 more earthquakes while harmonic tremor its continuing at minimum levels:
08/02/2012 18:38 Depth 14 km M 1.3 W EL PINAR
08/02/2012 18:51 Depth 12 km M 1.3 W FRONTERA
08/02/2012 19:18 Depth 12 km M 1.3 W FRONTERA
Update 08/02 – 20:32 UTC
– When Pam and New wrote us “SLS”, we immediately forwarded the message to Joke who was on her way to El Pinar. She asked the bus driver to stop, got a lift from a friendly person to Montana Naos, took some pictures and hitchhiked again towards El Pinar. These are Jokes pictures.
Update 08/02 – 16:39 UTC
– Just after writing about the calm day, ER readers Pam and New notified us of Smoking Lava Stones.
Update 08/02 – 16:23 UTC
– A calm day at El Hierro with few spectacular events but with the very beautiful pictures of Joke Volta.
– only 1 new earthquake since the last update, but a medium powerful one which can well be seen on the IGN HT graph.
08/02/2012 15:35 Depth 12 km M 2.2 SW EL PINAR
Update 08/02 – 10:21 UTC
– Very minor harmonic tremor all night and morning so far, a little increase in HT at 03:05 for about an hour.
– Jacuzzi activity was very much present all night long in a very sensitive webcam seting. We enjoy this setting for maximum observation at night.
– 5 earthquakes so far today!
08/02/2012 00:42 Depth 14 km M 1.3 W EL PINAR
08/02/2012 00:43 Depth 12 km M 1.3 SW FRONTERA
08/02/2012 02:52 Depth 11 km M 1.4 W EL PINAR
08/02/2012 06:12 Depth 14 km M 0.8 SW EL PINAR
08/02/2012 07:33 Depth 20 km M 1.4 SW EL PINAR
Update 07/02 – 23:55 UTC
2 new earthquakes are making it a total of 10 today.
07/02/2012 22:57 Depth 11 km M 1.8 SW FRONTERA
07/02/2012 23:30 Depth 12 km M 1.7 SW FRONTERA
Update 07/02 – 23:02 UTC
– the current high sensitive webcam image shows the action in the jacuzzi. Hard to say what the light effects are (waves or hot material). That will be a question for CAP for Joke tomorrow or the day after tomorrow.
– Harmonic tremor has been minimal for many hours again, but the eruption is still going on.
– 2 new earthquakes that make it a total of 8 today
07/02/2012 20:20 Depth 13 km M 1.0 SW EL PINAR
07/02/2012 22:25 Depth 10 km M 1.2 S EL PINAR
– Readers like Julian have seen the Ramon Margalef continuing his bathymetry mission after dark.
– Images Joke Volta from today February 7 2012
Update 07/02 – 19:30 UTC
ER reader Julian writes in our comment section : In an interview with Ramon Ortiz (Volcanologist of CSIC) in local newspaper Canarias7, Mr. Ortiz says that according to past experiences, the eruptive process is finishing. The new HT increase of the last couple of days are the normal evolution to a new phase.
He says that two different possibilities are: 1- that this process ends in few days and/or a new eruption is going on in another location.
He says that right now there are two different eruptions. The one in Las Calmas, and another one elsewhere which we may never know where it is, beacuse of the depth in the north area.
(ER : the supposedly second vent in the north has been a fierce debate among scientists from the very beginning). We refer to some updates we wrote during the weeks after the coloring of the sea).
Update 07/02 – 17:56 UTC
– A CAP scientists who met Joke in El Pinar a few hours ago said to her that he has seen an extraordinary jacuzzi around noon UTC today. He was quiet fascinated about it.
– We are also fascinated about the strange harmonic tremor we see today. A lot of powerful starts gradually winding down, again and again. Now it is calm again, but we cannot remind having seen the same pattern since a long time. It may be very wise to follow HT the following hours in combination with the webcam.
Update 07/02 – 15:08 UTC
– 2 new earthquakes:
07/02/2012 13:31 Depth 12 km M 1.4 SW EL PINAR
07/02/2012 13:58 Depth 10 km M 1.6 SW FRONTERA
Update 07/02 – 13:55 UTC
– The Ramón Margalef IEO Oceanographic vessel is back in town. He is making a new bathymetry session enabling IEO to measure the depth of the vent and to make new maps of the submarine cones. Meanwhile the local Canary Island press is quoting local volcanologists who are saying that IEO is not sharing the submarine research details with other (scientific) partners. It will at least take 2 to 3 days to get a new depth figure.
– 4 earthquakes so far today
07/02/2012 02:21 Depth 11 km M 1.0 SW EL PINAR
07/02/2012 10:29 Depth 15 km M 1.4 SW EL PINAR
07/02/2012 10:55 Depth 14 km M 1.3 SW FRONTERA
07/02/2012 11:37 Depth 13 km M 2.3 SW EL PINAR
– Harmonic tremor started to grow gradually after 03:00 as Ursula said in the comments (she lives in Australia and is looking at the HT graph and webcam while most Europeans sleep), winding down just before noon. Very suddenly everything restarted forcefully at 13:32 UTC, although nothing more than degassing can be seen at the surface.
Update 06/02 – 23:55 UTC
– Joke Volta pictures of February 6, 2012. No SLS today.
Update 06/02 – 23:24 UTC
– INVOLCAN has just published two high definition videos of today’s flight. We can see how they measured gas levels and took thermal images, which would be useful if they made public. There is a strong degassing, blue stain, that can be observed.
– Second video shows the green stain in La Restinga port.
– Eruption webcam is showing a good view the stain even now that is dark. A near full moon illuminates the sea enough for the camera to capture an image. Also, the webcam was cleaned today for better image quality.
– Another earthquake since our last update
06/02/2012 21:43 Depth 15 km M 1.7 W EL PINAR
Update 06/02 – 21:50 UTC
– One more earthquake since last update:
06/02/2012 18:04 Depth 11 km M 1.7
