Keep this page open or return regularly as we will be back with more details when they become available

Update : Based on the cartography and on condition that the preliminary epicenter is correct, we can report that the epicenter was below a rocky area 3.5 km from a valley with a lot of cultivated fields.

Update Within a radius of 270 km NO important + M5 earthquakes were registered in the recent history

Update : We ask ourselves at Earthquake-Report.com why USGS earthquake maps are stopping at the Canadian border for this earthquake.

Update Theoretical estimates are giving the following MMI numbers for the various cities and villages near the epicenter :
V MMI (moderate shaking) : Omak and Okanogan
II MMI (very weak shaking) : Brewster, Bridgeport, Coulee Dam and Entiat

Update Based on the I Have Felt It reports received from the British Columbia area, the number of people who have felt the earthquake is far more than the expected numbers from USGS.

Update : Following the theoretical calculations from USGS, the earthquake was felt by 1,000 people as a moderate V MMI shaking, 12,000 people have felt a light shaking and 36,000 people a weak to very weak shaking.

Earthquake in Georgia

Small earthquake strikes in northwest corner of Georgia

U.S. Geological Survey
A tiny earthquake struck in northwest Georgia this morning near the Alabama state line. The 1.9 magnitude earthquake struck at 5:49 a.m. about 7 miles northwest of Trion, Ga., the U.S. Geological Survey reports. The quake was about four miles deep, according to the survey.

Earthquakes of that magnitude are generally too weak to be felt.

Today’s small quake was located within the Eastern Tennessee Seismic Zone, which includes a portion of northeast Alabama.

But then, Consider this report:

11/13/2011 — Georgia earthquake near DORMANT VOLCANO — Vulcan Mining company @ location !

video here:

link:    http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=-BjrCdtSGn8

A 2.7 magnitude earthquake struck the state of Georgia this past week — several people reported hearing some kind of “explosion”– then felt an earthquake.

I think I may have determined a “cause” or a likely “earthquake trigger” — and more specifically, why THIS area in particular can expect further movement .  Also, I think this may explain why some people heard an explosion of some kind.

Screenshot of the earthquake culprit below:

We see a chain of “old” dormant volcanic sites .. furthest to the south we see a massive supervolcano caldera.. several miles across.. 4 miles long / 2 miles wide

There is a MINE at the location in question — on Blue Hole Road @ Pigeon Mountain in Georgia…. the name of the mine is… seen on google earth street view —

VULCAN MINES !!

Check out the GATE TO THE MINE !

……….

In short — my opinion — the earthquake in Georgia was due to the old dormant supervolcano caldera, cone, and blasted out flank volcano .. located 19 miles west of the earthquake epicenter.

This is due to the global uptick in volcanic / tectonic activity.. literally, we are seeing volcanic areas which have been dormant for thousands of years are starting to show some activity — Pisgah, Black Hills, Volcano CA, Mono Lake, Yellowstone uplift, sites in Idaho, Utah, Missouri, Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama have shown activity… this is just listing USA activity recently (past 2 months).

Now we can add Pigeon Mountain to the list .

Another San Antonio, TX Earthquake

Earth moves again for San Antonians

SAN ANTONIO EXPRESS-NEWS
Updated 06:16 p.m., Saturday, November 12, 2011

SAN ANTONIO – A magnitude 3.3 earthquake shook a rural area south of San Antonio early Saturday morning.

The quake, with its epicenter about 44 miles southeast of the city, struck at about 4:35 a.m., according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

No damage was reported.

A 4.8 magnitude quake that struck the area last month was the largest ever recorded since USGS began keeping track.

Experts say smaller earthquakes are not uncommon for the area.

Alan Dutton, chairman of the Department of Geological Sciences at the University of Texas at San Antonio, has told the Express-News that the region generally gets a tremor every two to four years, more or less.

The largest quake ever recorded in Texas history happened Aug. 16, 1931. It had a magnitude of 5.8, and its epicenter was near Valentine, in Jeff Davis County in far West Texas.

Turkey Aftershock

November 10 aftershock near Van, Turkey – Japanese aid worker killed in collapse of Bayram Hotel

Last update: November 10, 2011 at 4:08 pm by By

Earthquake overview : The already so hard hit Van Ercis area was hit by another earthquake – Aftershock in the evening of November 9 2011. Additional damage and injuries are almost a certainty

Update 10/11 – 15:40 UTC :
Early Thursday, the dead body of a Japanese aid worker, Atsushi Miyazaki, was pulled out the rubble of the Bayram Hotel in Van, Turkey. His friend, another member of Japan’s Association for Aid and Relief, could be rescued by SAR workers

Update 10/11 – 15:35 UTC :
Angry residents protested Thursday that authorities should have closed the 2 collapsed hotels. Both hotels were damaged by the October 23 earthquake. Police used pepper spray to halt the protests.

Update 10/11 – 08:49 UTC :
Various reports in Turkish newspapers are talking about people still being buried under the debris of the hotels. The official AFAD death toll remains at 7, but we expect that it will increase slightly the following hours.

Update 10/11 – 05:00 UTC :
In Edremit, 100 people have been injured. This town was right by the epicenter.

Update 10/11 – 04:45 UTC :
KOERI has said that they expect around 80 deaths. However, given the fact that only 4 buildings were inhabited at the time of collapse, it is hoped that this is not true.

Update 10/11 – 04:40 UTC : Contrary to early opinions, only 36 people are expected to have been in the Bayram Hotel at the time of collapse. (From the 2 hotels that collapsed, 23 have been rescued, 7 found dead).

A major decision by the Ministry of Education. They have announced that schools in Van will not be opened until after the earthquake of December 5, 2011 (delayed from November 14, 2011).

Update 10/11 – 04:35 UTC :
If we focus on the Bayram Hotel picture for a moment, it can be seen that the structure has a weak first floor (higher than the rest of the building) which could indicate what is called a “soft storey collapse”, where the first floor collapses and then the rest of the building following it.

Update 10/11 – 04:30 UTC :
According to reports, 7 people have been found dead so far, with 22 people recovered alive.
Some good news was that 22 of the 25 buildings that collapsed were unoccupied at the time.
The Aslan Otel (or Lion Hotel) also collapsed.

Update 10/11 – 00:45 UTC :  The SAR (Search and Rescue) operations are continuing. We will have to wait a couple of hours until daylight to get more information from the epicenter area.

Update :  This earthquake has killed at least three people and collapsed 21 buildings including a hotel in eastern Turkey. More people are believed to have been trapped under the rubble. SAR (Search and Rescue) teams are trying to find possible survivors.

Update :  Nine planes carrying almost 300 additional rescue personnel have been dispatched to the quake region.

Update :   Koeri puts the epicenter right on the town of Edremit. It is unclear what effects the earthquake has had there in this town on the outskirts of Van located on Lake Van.

update : As expected by earthquake-report.com, no damage or injuries have been reported so far by the Dirección General de Bomberos y de la Cruz Roja Nicaragüense

Update : The Instituto Nicaragüense de Estudios Territoriales, Ineter, is reporting a magnitude of 5.8 at a depth of 164 km.

Update : The earthquake was felt as strong by people of Rivas, Moyogalpa, Altagracia and the Island of  Ometepe

Update : Cities with a MMI IV shaking ( K= 1000 people)
Belen 5k, Potosi 5k, Moyogalpa 4k, Buenos Aires    2k, Rivas 30k, San Jorge 7k, Masaya 130k, Tipitapa 127k,Managua 973k

Update : USGS has calculated with their models that nearly 3 million people will have experienced a light MMI IV shaking and 6.4 million people a weak MMI III shaking

Update : Tsunamis cannot be generated in this kind of earthquakes

Update : The depth of the hypocenter will have a weakening effect on the shaking. We expect no more than a weak to light shaking in a vast area of hundreds of km

Update : The earthquake was also felt in the neighboring countries

5.7 Earthquake in Afghanistan

Strong Afghanistan earthquake felt in all neighboring countries

Last update: November 7, 2011 at 1:37 pm by By

Landscape in the epicenter area – Panoramio Image courtesy Romin Fararoon

Update : To simplify what happened, the depth can also be seen as the distance away from the location above it. Therefore deep earthquakes are felt the same way in many many locations as the waves will reach the surface with a similar strength over tens of km’s.

Update : Data as seen by other seismological agencies than USGS :
GFZ : M 5.5 @ 199 km
EMSC :   M 5.4 @ 221 km
Good signs that certainly NO damage will have been inflicted

Update : This earthquake was felt in such a wide area because of the combination of magnitude and depth

Update : nearly 7 million people will have felt a weak shaking

Update : a max. weak shaking has been felt in a very wide area

What initiated this article
Felt it Reports arrive from Pakistan
Preliminary data (not confirmed yet) are mentioning a 5.7 magnitude earthquake at very unsure depth
Light shaking is reported from Rawalpindi and Islamabad. Also from Afghanistan , Uzbekistan
Hopefully a deep earthquake ! Magnitude will be around 5.8
We are receiving a lot of I Have Felt It forms at the moment
Luckily, USGS reports a (preliminary) 5.8 earthquake at a (preliminary) depth of 219 km , which makes this earthquake harmless !

Oklahoma Quake Aftershocks

Oklahoma rattled by 5.6 earthquake

Homes damaged and roads buckled by series of shocks including the biggest on record in US state

Oklahoma has been shaken by a series of earthquakes

Earthquakes of up to 5.6 magnitude have shaken Oklahoma, damaging buildings and roads and sending a handful of people to hospital.

The first quake was recorded on Saturday morning at a magnitude of 4.7. The second came on Saturday night and is the largest recorded in Oklahoma, topping a tremor of 5.5 magnitude in 1952, according to the US Geological Survey.

In Prague, Oklahoma, where the first quake was centred, city manager Jim Greff said part of the town library’s ceiling collapsed and a chimney fell through the roof of a home. There were no serious injuries.

The quake buckled highway 62 in three places west of Prague and sent a boulder “about the size of an SUV” tumbling onto a rural road in south-east Lincoln County, said Aaron Bennett, dispatch supervisor for the county’s emergency management division.

The quake was felt more than 300 miles away in Kansas City, where it rattled windows and shook houses for half a minute.

The second quake was a shallow 3.1 miles (5 km) deep and centered four miles east of Sparks, east of Oklahoma City.

JL Gilbert, owner of the Sparks Vineyard and Winery, about four miles from the epicentre of the second quake, said it lasted “a good 30 seconds”.

“It was a pretty good jolt. We’re not used to this. We’re used to being sucked up into the wind,” he said, referring to Oklahoma’s reputation as a tornado alley.

Earthquakes of a 4.0 magnitude east of the Rocky Mountains can typically be felt from up to 60 miles away, according to the USGS. A 5.5 magnitude quake can be felt up to 300 miles from its epicentre.

One of Gilbert’s employees went to the hospital after tripping and hitting his head on a doorway while scrambling to get out of his home, Gilbert said.
