Very strong earthquake near the coast of Vancouver Island, Canada – NO Tsunami – NO serious damage
Last update: April 24, 2014 at 5:42 pm by By Armand Vervaeck
Update 17:35 UTC : And to complete the story we add a video from CBC where a meteorologist/seismologist explains exactly the same what we have reiterated soon after the earthquake struck :
Update 14:55 UTC : The seismogram from this earthquake as it was registered at a station in Oregon.
Update 14:15 UTC : The aftershocks so far :
Update 13:28 UTC : A video roundup (compilation) which we like a lot
Update 09:33 UTC : Lower Mainland videos as compilated by Gloalnews Canada. Nothing spectacular, but some swaying of chandeliers.
Update 09:25 UTC : Pat Quealey from Emergency Management B.C. said they are hearing there may be some minor damage, but no significant damage. However, they are checking into reports that a First Nations lodge may have shifted on its foundations during the earthquake.
Update 05:03 UTC : A word of “Thank You” to all those people who have felt this earthquake and have reported what they have felt to this site. We (the people behind earthquake-report.com) and our many readers from all over the world are really appreciating your contributions. Together we make the best report in the world!
Update 04:38 UTC : The graphic below gives an overview of the historic earthquakes in the greater epicenter area (courtesy British Columbia Institute of Technology)
+
On October 28 2012 a Massive (much stronger than today) Magnitude 7.7 earthquake struck along the Queen Charlotte sound. Click here to read our in-depth article of this earthquake.
Update 04:30 UTC : USGS has now decreased the Magnitude by one point to M6.6 (initially M6.7). Recalculations of Magnitudes are a normal aspect of earthquakes (very complicated science). The main movement should have been a North-West to South-East (see beachball below)
Update 04:23 UTC : The map below shows the tectonic plates in the greater epicenter area. The star represents the epicenter below the North American plate. Very strong to even massive earthquakes are not uncommon here due to the strong movement of the plates. Left plate : the Pacific plate – Right plate : North American continental plate – South plate : Explorer plate – The area has really complicated tectonics partly with all kings of faulting along the different tectonic plates.
Update 04:15 UTC : Max Wyss theoretical damage engine does not expect any injuries or fatalities from this earthquake. Always nice to see our expectations confirmed
Update 04:06 UTC : Every experience report we receive from Canadians has also an MMI shaking intensity value as it was perceived by the reporting people. This tels us a maximum average light shaking (MMI IV) which would not lead to any damage. A report from Port Hardy (close to the epicenter) is confirming this.
Update 04:06 UTC : In downtown Vancouver some residents in high rises buildings said they felt their building or chandeliers sway.
Update 04:02 UTC : Historical seismicity map for area around Vancouver Island M6.6 strike-slip quake (courtesy Jascha Polet). The historical Faulting Mechanism map shows mainly a horizontal strike/slip mechanism in the area. Earthquakes are occurring at both sides of the subduction zone.
Update 03:56 UTC : Residents in Port Hardy said the ground shook for about 35 to 40 seconds. The I Have Felt It map below shows only weak to very weak shaking on Vancouver Island.
Update 03:54 UTC : Most reports we are seeing right now are telling fallen objects in houses, nothing seriously. Groceries were knocked off the shelves at the local Overwaitea store. People are saying they felt it as far away as Langley and Kelowna. People are also reporting that the shaking lasted about 20 to 30 seconds.
Update 03:52 UTC : We notice multiple moderate to strong aftershocks in the epicenter area
Update 03:49 UTC : The same area was hit by a M6.9 earthquake in 1918. That earthquake was a little to the South East and below land. The epicenter of this earthquake is on top of the subduction zoner where the Pacific plate subducts the North American plate.
Update : Initial Focal Mechanism of the earthquake as reported by Jascha Polet, seismologist. The beachball shows a strike/slip mechanism (mainly horizontal movement). This was also the case in most historic earthquakes in the area.
Update : The strongest shaking as perceived by people along the Vancouver Island coast should be MMI V or moderate shaking.

Understanding the Haida Gwaii, British Columbia (Canada) October 27/28 2012 massive earthquake
Last update: November 8, 2012 at 5:59 pm by By Armand Vervaeck
A massive M7.7 earthquake struck below Haida Gwaii, formerly known as Queen Charlotte Islands Canada –
The October 28th, 2012 (October 27 at the location of the epicenter) M 7.7 earthquake south of Masset, Canada, occurred as a result of oblique-thrust faulting near the plate boundary between the Pacific and North America plates. At the location of this event, the Pacific plate moves approximately north-northwest with respect to the North America plate at a rate of approximately 50 mm/yr.
This earthquake is likely associated with relative motion across the Queen Charlotte fault system offshore of British Columbia, Canada. Studies of tectonics in this region suggest plate motions are taken up by strike slip faulting parallel to the plate boundary, accompanied by lesser amounts of thrust motion to accommodate the oblique nature of the plate motion vector between the two plates with respect to the orientation of the main plate boundary fault structure.
This oblique component of plate motion may involve either underthrusting of the western edge of the Pacific Plate beneath North America, or be taken up on crustal faults within the North America plate. The October 28th earthquake is consistent with either scenario.
This region of the Pacific:North America plate boundary has hosted 7 earthquakes of magnitude 6 or greater over the past 40 years – the largest of which was a M 6.6 earthquake in 2009, 80 km to the south east of the 2012 earthquake.
In 1949, a M 8.1 earthquake occurred closer to the Pacific:North America plate boundary, likely as a result of strike-slip faulting, approximately 100 km northwest of the October 28th earthquake, near the northern extent of Haida Gwaii region (formerly Queen Charlotte Islands).
Felt (V) in the Masset-Queen Charlotte City area and (IV) at Fort Saint James, Kelowna, Kitimat, Prince Rupert and Revelstoke. Felt from Seattle, Washington to Juneau, Alaska and Calgary, Alberta.

– The max. tsunami waves so far measured at Hawaii are 76 cm high at Kahului (Maui) (still less than expected by the weather channel). These are the most readings so far :
The video below is a very interesting interview with a scientists from NOAA. He is giving a lot of info on the tsunami waves and their behaviour in Hawaii.
2012-10-28 10:27 UTC CBC Canada reports that Dennis Sinnott (Canadian Institute of Ocean Science) said that a 69-centimetre wave was recorded off Langara Island on the northeast tip of Haida Gwaii, formerly called the Queen Charlotte Islands. The islands are home to about 5,000 people, many of them members of the Haida aboriginal group.
Another 55-centimetre wave hit Winter Harbour on the northeast coast of Vancouver Island, while a 12-centimetre wave was recorded in Tofino, on Vancouver Island’s west coast.

– The earthquake has been felt as far as Edmonton, Canada which is … 1700 km east of the epicenter
– Hawaii keeps his breath for eventual tsunami waves or currents
– A TSUNAMI IS A SERIES OF LONG OCEAN WAVES. EACH INDIVIDUAL WAVE CREST CAN LAST 5 TO 15 MINUTES OR MORE AND EXTENSIVELY FLOOD COASTAL AREAS. THE DANGER CAN CONTINUE FOR MANY HOURS AFTER THE INITIAL WAVE AS SUBSEQUENT WAVES ARRIVE. TSUNAMI WAVE HEIGHTS CANNOT BE PREDICTED AND THE FIRST WAVE MAY NOT BE THE LARGEST.
TSUNAMI WAVES EFFICIENTLY WRAP AROUND ISLANDS. ALL SHORES ARE AT RISK NO MATTER WHICH DIRECTION THEY FACE.
THE TROUGH OF A TSUNAMI WAVE MAY TEMPORARILY EXPOSE THE SEAFLOOR BUT THE AREA WILL QUICKLY FLOOD AGAIN.
EXTREMELY STRONG AND UNUSUAL NEARSHORE CURRENTS CAN ACCOMPANY A TSUNAMI. DEBRIS PICKED UP AND CARRIED BY A TSUNAMI AMPLIFIES ITS DESTRUCTIVE POWER.
SIMULTANEOUS HIGH TIDES OR HIGH SURF CAN SIGNIFICANTLY INCREASE THE TSUNAMI HAZARD.

– The earthquake occurred 2 hours ago and various tsunami warnings and advisories are still in effect for the greater earthquake and coastal areas.
– At Langara (northern point of Haida Gwaii (epicenter island), a tsunami surge has been measured of 44 cm)
– At Hawaii the wave is estimated to arrive at 10:28 PM local time
– For those among you interested to look at live webcams, we have found a live broadcasting webcam from Hawaii – Click here to watch it. A surge of less than 1 meter will be hard to see in the dark. Some stirring water (shaking boats) are a possibility. We hear the Tsunami warning sirens howling at the webcam. Great initiative from this webcam owner to do the live streaming !

– Haida Gwaii (former Queen Charlotte Islands and epicenter of the earthquake) reports to Canadian Broadcasting that some homes have been damaged
2012-10-28 05:19 UTC
– More aftershocks are being reported. They however are less than M5, which is a good sign.
– The occurrence of a similar or even bigger earthquake than the mainshock cannot be excluded but happens very rarely.
– Earthquake-report.com does thank our many Alaska and British Colombia readers who have shared their experience with our site. Earthquake reporting can be only complete in the case of a interaction with those who felt the shaking
2012-10-28 05:07 UTC Alaska Tsunami center report nr. 5 – Tsunami alert is still in place THE WARNING ZONES REMAIN THE SAME IN THIS MESSAGE. AN ADVISORY HAS BEEN ISSUED FOR THE REST OF BRITISH COLUMBIA- SOUTH OF THE NORTH TIP OF VANCOUVER ISLAND.

Some relevant tweets our Carlos Robles has intercepted
– “We were just sitting down relaxing and all of a sudden — boom! I thought it was a major landslide,” said Martynuik. “The epicentre had to be right close to us because the power went out right away. The quake seemed to last forever.”
– Tsunami ….”apparently” Sandspit got a 8 ft rise .

2012-10-28 04:50 UTC
– The tsunami evacuation seems to work well at the moment. A lot of people (ut limited in number) have been called to evacuate for higher ground and did so in the meanwhile
– The epicenter of the 3 M5+ aftershocks is heading more to the coast. No aftershock of M6 or more so far
2012-10-28 04:46 UTC
– We repeat that the Tsunami alert is only called for portions of the British Columbia and Alaska coast. Hawaii and the greater Pacific basin have NO alert issued.
– Pacofi and Lockeport, Canada are the locations which may get tsunami waves of respectively 1.7 and 1.5 meter. Other locations are expected to get a max. of 0.3 m. (source info + graphic below : GDACS)
2012-10-28 04:40 UTC
As soon as the Tsunami alert is canceled, we will bring the news to our readers.
The tsunami alert will only affect a limited number of people. Tsunami level calculations are extremely difficult as the wave height can be different for every portion of the coast depending on the coastal floor.
2012-10-28 04:32 UTC
Some press reports are stating that the quake was not felt in Vancouver, which does not correspond with the reports we have received from our readers (see below).
2012-10-28 04:24 UTC
Based on the reports below, the shaking lasted 30 seconds to a minute, a normal shaking time for such a huge earthquake
2012-10-28 04:18 UTC
The Alaska tsunami center has just issued a third report which keeps the tsunami warning as it was mentioned before. These are the most important elements of this report :
A SMALL TSUNAMI HAS BEEN RECORDED ON A DEEP OCEAN PRESSURE SENSOR. THE WARNING REGION REMAINS THE SAME IN THIS BULLETIN.

ARE ONLY ORDERED BY EMERGENCY RESPONSE AGENCIES.
- IF IN A TSUNAMI WARNING COASTAL AREA MOVE INLAND TO HIGHER
GROUND.
2012-10-28 04:13 UTC – Except for the Tsunami danger, the dangerous shaking impact will be limited to approx. 2000 people who will have sustained a MMI VII, very strong shaking experience.
– 18000 people will have felt a strong MMI VI shaking and another 186000 people a moderate shaking.
– Please find the experiences of people below this page
Shaking intensities (image courtesy USGS)
2012-10-28 04:00 UTC – About 2000 people are living within 100 km from the epicenter
– A considerable number of strong aftershocks have been striking the epicenter area
2012-10-28 03:53 UTC – People living in coastal areas along British Colombia and Alaska should better be going for higher ground. Tsunami calculations are far from perfect and a auto-safety move for higher ground is always preferable.
– The area is merely unpopulated and the closest populated settlements are quite far from the epicenter.
– Haida Gwaii is a National Park, but should be almost without visitors at this time of the year.
2012-10-28 03:45 UTC – Another agency, GDACS who is using data from USGS reports that : It is likely that a tsunami was generated. The maximum tsunami wave height near the coast of Lockeport will be 1.66m.
GDACS Tsunami expectation – max. tsunami height 1.66 m
2012-10-28 03:44 UTC – THE MAGNITUDE IS UPDATED TO 7.7. THE WARNING ZONE REMAINS THE SAME.

Earthquake overview : At 05.09 AM on November 18 2011, a moderate earthquake struck the western USA / Canada border. The shallow depth of 11.9 km made it feel as a strong earthquake
Keep this page open or return regularly as we will be back with more details when they become available
Update : Based on the cartography and on condition that the preliminary epicenter is correct, we can report that the epicenter was below a rocky area 3.5 km from a valley with a lot of cultivated fields.
Update : Within a radius of 270 km NO important + M5 earthquakes were registered in the recent history
Update : We ask ourselves at Earthquake-Report.com why USGS earthquake maps are stopping at the Canadian border for this earthquake.
Update : Theoretical estimates are giving the following MMI numbers for the various cities and villages near the epicenter : V MMI (moderate shaking) : Omak and Okanogan
II MMI (very weak shaking) : Brewster, Bridgeport, Coulee Dam and Entiat
Update : Based on the I Have Felt It reports received from the British Columbia area, the number of people who have felt the earthquake is far more than the expected numbers from USGS.
Update : Following the theoretical calculations from USGS, the earthquake was felt by 1,000 people as a moderate V MMI shaking, 12,000 people have felt a light shaking and 36,000 people a weak to very weak shaking.
