Car Design Duds

OK, I’ll admit it.  I am a car junkie.  And I do remember these guys:

10 Car Design Duds

Innovative or ill-advised? You be the judge. Here are 10 cars that just never quite caught on.

When writing about Nissan’s Murano CrossCabriolet recently, I was reminded how difficult it is to create a new automotive concept — and how harshly the market treats original ideas. The CrossCabrio is the ambitious — or perhaps foolhardy — attempt to create a crossover with a convertible top.
Bright ideas are hard to pull off. For every Chrysler minivan orFord Explorer four-door SUV, there are dozens of one-hit wonders and new concepts that failed to catch on. ThePontiac Aztek, an unholy combination of minivan and SUV, is the classic example, but there have been many others through the years.

New Anti-Viral Drug

New drug could cure nearly any viral infection

August 16, 2011
“In theory, it should work against all viruses,”
– Todd Rider, a senior staff scientist in Lincoln Laboratory’s Chemical, Biological, and Nanoscale Technologies Group

Most bacterial infections can be treated with antibiotics such as penicillin, discovered decades ago. However, such drugs are useless against viral infections, including influenza, the common cold, and deadly hemorrhagic fevers such as Ebola.

Now, in a development that could transform how viral infections are treated, a team of researchers at MIT’s Lincoln Laboratory has designed a drug that can identify cells that have been infected by any type of virus, then kill those cells to terminate the infection.

In a paper published July 27 in the journal PLoS One, the researchers tested their drug against 15 viruses, and found it was effective against all of them – including rhinoviruses that cause the common cold, H1N1 influenza, a stomach virus, a polio virus, dengue fever and several other types of hemorrhaggic fever.

New Crop Circle

August 16, 2011 – Complex U. K. Crop Formation
Triggers Debate About Meaning.

Is it a 5-dimensional hypercube, a penteract? Or a decagram related to Venus as a time-counter? Is it E8 symmetry of subatomic particles? Is the symbol at the top a “signature by” Quetzalcoatl who taught the Mayans math and astronomy? Or is it self-activating software that generates unidentified action from the pattern?

Football field-sized wheat formation reported August 15, 2011,
at Jubilee Plantation near Cherhill, Wiltshire, England.

NASA will hold a press conference Thursday (Aug. 18) to discuss “new details about the structure of solar storms and the impact they have on Earth,” space agency officials said in a statement.

The briefing this week will review new observations from several NASA spacecraft, including the Solar Terrestrial Relations Observatory (Stereo), that currently keep a close eye on the sun, agency officials said in the statement released today (Aug. 16)

cumin as memory booster and stress reliever

The popular spice cumin has a long history of medicinal use.  It has been used to treat various symptoms including diarrhea, flatulence, gynecological, and respiratory diseases.  But a new study looked at a different effect of cumin — its ability to enhance memory and relieve stress.

Daily administration of cumin to rats inhibited stress-induced urinary biochemical changes. Memory and cognition, as determined by acquisition, retention, and recovery in the rats, was also observed to be enhanced by cumin.

According to the study, as reported by Green Med Info:

“This study provides scientific support for the antistress, antioxidant, and memory-enhancing activities of cumin extract and substantiates that its traditional use as a culinary spice in foods is beneficial and scientific in combating stress and related disorders.”

County Sheriffs and the Law

The County Sheriff
America’s Last Hope

Sheriff Mack’s latest book covers decades of research to prove once and for all that the sheriffs in this country are indeed the ultimate law authority in their respective jurisdictions. The sheriff absolutely has the power and responsiblity to defend his citizens against all enemies, including those from our own Federal Government. History, case law, common law and common sense all show clear evidence that the sheriff is the people’s protector in all issues of injustice and is responsible for keeping the peace in all matters. He is the last line of defense for his constituents; he is America’s last hope to regain our forgotten freedom. This short but powerful book is a must read for all citizens, sheriffs, and government officials that we may all work to return America to the constitutional republic she was meant to be. Amazing as it might be, the sheriff can make this happen!

Hmmm.  And he is a speaker at Tea Party functions.

3 Lessons From Diana Nyad’s Failed Swimming Attempt

by Danny Groner

For a short time this week, the world rallied behind a 61-year-old woman hoping to swim from Cuba to Florida. But Diana Nyad’s dream came to a disappointing end on Tuesday because of wind, currents and asthma problems, according to reports. After swimming for 29 hours, Nyad called it quits, 53 miles short of her destination. In spite of Nyad’s failure, commentators — and Nyad herself — have found lessons and inspiration inside of the mission. Here, the best takes:

  • Chicago Sun-Times editorial: “We see a stirring triumph… So what if she missed by miles and hours? Nyad has provided baby boomers approaching Medicare with some valuable lessons on how to think about age and the limits of the body.” It concludes, “If there’s been a more inspiring athletic performance this year — harnessing an indomitable spirit to the all-too-domitable flesh — we missed it.

(TheWeatherSpace.com) — Let us move out of the United States to down South. New Zealand’s Northern Island has flights grounded, roads closed, and power outages in the first snowfall in 40 years.

Blizzards hit the South Island before moving northward into the more populated North Island.

“This is the first snowfall in over 40 years for this region,” said TheWeatherSpace Senior Meteorologist Kevin Martin. “Looking at the upper air charts this cold spell will last for another couple of days, till around Wednesday night.”

Christchurch, an area plagued by major earthquakes in the last year, was among the populated zones to be affected by the snowfall.

“Usually rare events around the world such as this one and the new tropical storm record (article here) means that an usual pattern will hit this Winter across the world not seen in around 50 years,” said Martin.
