Hidden beneath an ancient palace in what is now central Sudan, archaeologists have discovered the oldest building in the city of Meroë, a structure that also may have housed royalty.

At its height, the city was controlled by a dynasty of kings who ruled about 900 miles (1,500 kilometers) of territory that stretched from southern Egypt to areas south of modern-day Khartoum.

People of Meroë built palaces and small pyramids, and developed a writing system that scholars still can’t fully translate today. Although Meroë has been excavated off and on for more than 150 years, archaeologists are not yet clear on how it came to be. The city seems to have emerged out of nowhere

Night Time Solar Radio Burst

fr/spaceweather.com

NIGHT-TIME SOLAR RADIO BURST: The M9-class solar flare of August 4th produced a burst of shortwave static so powerful that receivers on Earth picked it up after sunset. “A RadioJove observer in Florida recorded the burst when the sun was 38 degrees below the horizon,” reports amateur radio astronomer Thomas Ashcraft. Ashcraft’s own radio telescope in New Mexico recorded the event 1 hour and 54 minutes after sunset:

“To my knowledge, receptions like this are very rare,” says Ashcraft.

Indeed they are. This event brings to mind the iconic night-time solar radio burst of March 8, 1958. Five radio telescopes at the University of Florida picked up emissions from the sun while observing the planet Jupiter in tthe middle of the night. On the other side of the world, radio astronomers in daylit Australia confirmed that a powerful solar radio burst had taken place at that exact time. The event is described in a 1959 Nature paper by pioneering radio astronomers Alex Smith and Tom Carr. They considered the possibility that solar radio waves might have been reflected by the Moon or carried to the night side of Earth by ionospheric ducting. In tthe end, they could not conclusively explain what happened and to this day night-time solar radio bursts remain a puzzle.

Subsiding Solar Storm

fr/spaceweather.com

SUBSIDING STORM: Earth’s magnetic field is still reverberating from a CME strike on August 5th that sparked one of the strongest geomagnetic storms in years. Registering 8 on the 0 to 9 “K-index” scale of magnetic disturbances, the storm at maximum sparked auroras across Europe and in many northern-tier US states. Travis Novitsky sends this picture from Grand Portage, Minnesota:

“For an hour and a half the sky was filled with dancing lights, some of the best I’ve ever seen in Northern Minnesota!” says Novitsky.

The storm is subsiding now, but it could flare up again as gusty solar wind continues to buffet Earth’s magnetic field

(TheWeatherSpace.com) — TheWeatherSpace.com is monitoring a frontal zone through the Upper Plains to Midwestern States that may produce tornadic supercells.

A TWS Tornado Watch was issued just after noon central time. TWS Senior Meteorologist Kevin Martin is monitoring the potential severe weather event that may produce tornadoes.

“Anywhere from Central Minnesota down through Iowa and Nebraska, including Eastern South Dakota is at risk,” said Martin. The highest threat looks to be somewhere in Eastern Nebraska where the best shear and backing surface winds exist.”

Spirituality & Evolution

Is Spirituality a Byproduct of Evolution?

Posted: 8/5/11 08:16 AM ET

Homo sapiens evolved to be socially intelligent. Over millions of years, perhaps more, the primate brain evolved special machinery to allow us to think socially, to build abstract concepts of each other’s minds and to react emotionally to each other in a way that more or less maintains the social web. In one theory that is gaining greater acceptance, the social machinery in the human brain is the direct cause of spirituality. Spirituality is the human brain doing exactly what it is exquisitely well evolved to do. It is the functioning of our social intelligence.

If spiders could ever become super intelligent, they might see the world through the metaphor of a web. They might talk about sticky strands of thought. They might envision a universe pulled out of a spinneret. They might judge beauty by radial symmetry. Looking at the moon, they might see a web-in-the-moon instead of a man-in-the-moon. The natural talent of humans is to spin metaphors of minds and intentions, and that is how we evaluate almost everything around us. We understand and react to the world through our social capability. It defines us more than any other trait. Even language is a refinement of social communication. We are truly Homo socialis.

How Comets Cause Meteor Showers

Meteor showers occur when the Earth’s orbit takes it through the path of a comet, which spews debris as it passes, like junk falling out of the back of a poorly-secured garbage truck. Bits of debris plunge through the Earth’s atmosphere, and friction causes the debris to burn up, creating meteors.

Strong CME Incoming

ONE DOWN, TWO TO GO: As predicted by analysts at the GSFC Space Weather Lab, the first of three CMEs produced by the recent spate of flare activity reached Earth during the late hours of August 4th. The impact was weak and is not expected to produce strong geomagnetic storms. Two more CMEs are still on the way and, as described below, they may have merged into a single cloud that could produce significant storming when they reach Earth on August 5th at 10:00 UT (plus or minus 7 hours). A new model of all 3 CMEs is now available; stay tuned for updates.

STRONG SOLAR ACTIVITY: On August 4th, active sunspot 1261 unleashed a strong solar flare, the third in as many days. The blast, which registered M9.3 on the Richter Scale of Flares, hurled a bright coronal mass ejection (CME) almost directly toward Earth. Click on the image to view a movie of the expanding cloud recorded by the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory:

Note: The many speckles in this movie are caused by energetic solar protons hitting the camera.

Moving at an estimated speed of 1950 km/s, this CME is expected to sweep up an earlier CME already en route. Analysts at the GSFC Space Weather Lab say the combined-CME should reach Earth on August 5th at 10:00 UTplus or minus 7 hours: “The impact on Earth is likely to be major. The estimated maximum geomagnetic activity index level Kp is 7 (Kp ranges from 0 – 9). The flanks of the CME may also impact STEREO A, Mars and Mercury/MESSENGER.”

Typhoon Muifa Threatens China

5 August 2011 Last updated at 10:13 ET

Fishing boats take shelter in the port of Zhou Shan in China's Zhejiang province Thousands of fishing boats have been called back to harbour

China has put parts of its east coast on alert as powerful Typhoon Muifa approaches the country.

Muifa passed Taiwan on Friday and is heading for Zhejiang and Jiangsu provinces, close to Shanghai, saidChina’s Central Meteorological Office.

More than 7,000 fishing boats have been called back to harbour, as winds reached 162km/h (100mph), generating waves of 36ft (11m) out at sea.

Air travel faces disruption and coastal areas are preparing for evacuations.

China Southern Airlines has cancelled more than 140 flights to eastern China from Saturday afternoon while Shanghai-based China Eastern Airlines warned of a “severe impact” on services, reported AFP news agency.

An orange alert has been issued to ships and fishing vessels, China’s second-highest alert level, the meteorological office said.

Typhoon Muifa is expected to make landfall in China on Saturday night or early on Sunday.
