Threat from Volcanoes in Ballarat

Ballarat’s extinct volcanoes could pose risk, expert says

BY TOM MCILROY

THE Ballarat region could be at risk from new volcanoes forming as Victoria remains overdue for a volcanic eruption, a University of Melbourne geologist has warned.Associate Professor Bernie Joyce said yesterday that most of Australia was unprepared for a volcanic eruption which could come without much warning.

Professor Joyce said extinct volcanoes, including Mt Warrenheip and Mt Buninyong, suggested similar volcanoes could form in the area.

“Because the volcanoes around the Ballarat area are not as young as others across western Victoria and Mt Gambier, you could expect a new volcano to come up in a cluster at some point in the future,” he said.

Other Icelandic Volcano Ready to Erupt

Iceland’s Helka Volcano Ready To Erupt : Geophysicists

By Robert Robertsson ;

One of Iceland’s most feared volcanoes looks ready to erupt, with measurements indicating magma movement, Icelandic experts said Wednesday, raising fears of a new ash cloud halting flights over Europe.

The Hekla volcano is close to the ash-spewing Eyjafjoell, which last year caused the world’s biggest airspace shut down since World War II, affecting more than 100,000 flights and eight million passengers.

The Iceland Civil Protection Authority told AFP it was closely monitoring the situation.

Magnetospheres

Magnetosphere

A magnetosphere is that area of space, around a planet, that is controlled by the planet’s magnetic field. The shape of the Earth’s magnetosphere is the direct result of being blasted by solar wind. It prevents most of the particles from the Sun, carried in the solar wind, from hitting the Earth. The Sun and other planets have magnetospheres, but the Earth has the strongest one of all the rocky planets. The Earth’s magnetosphere is a highly dynamic structure that responds dramatically to solar variations. Life on Earth developed and is sustained under the protection of this variable magnetosphere.

Problems with the Dow

Why the Dow will end up plunging to 7,000

There are too many financial risks on the horizon that are being dismissed

By Douglas A. McIntyre

One theory of economics says that any market can return to a point where it has been in the past. The Great Recession was, by some measures as bad as the Great Depression. Unemployment was 3.6 percent in November 1966. It was at 4 percent in December 1999. There is no precedent for zero unemployment, but those two periods came close.

Recent movements in the stock market could repeat themselves as the economy lurches toward another recession. The DJIA fell to just below 6,630 on March 2, 2009. Back in October 2007, 17 months earlier, it briefly traded above 14,000. What happened? The most frequent answer is the recession that lasted from December 2007 until June 2009, a period determined by the National Bureau of Economic Research, caused the collapse. The recession lasted 18 months, which made it the longest of any downturn since World War II.

The DJIA could drop below 7,000 again before the middle of next year, down from 12,000 where it trades now. The market fell over 50 percent last 2008 and 2009. A correction to 7,000 this time would be 42 percent.

Difference between Brown & White Eggs

What’s the Difference Between Brown and White Eggs?

By Bjorn Carey, Life’s Little Mysteries Managing Editor

I have plans to cook an egg quiche thing and enough cinnamon rolls for 10 people this weekend, so I’m going to need a lot of eggs. Normally I’m not too discerning with my egg selection — they all scramble just as well to me. But, standing in the grocery store, I froze. Should I buy brown eggs, or white? Is one variety better for eggy dishes, and the other better for baked goods?

I had no clue, and after spending a good five minutes scanning every letter of labeling on the various brands of eggs, I felt no more in the know. So I gave up. I picked up a carton of the cheaper white eggs, headed for the checkout and hoped for the best, or at least a less costly mistake.

Cyclone? Hurricane? Typhoon? Which is Correct?

How Do Cyclones, Hurricanes and Typhoons Differ?

By Life’s Little Mysteries Staff
16 March 2010 12:46 PM ET

Cyclone, typhoon and hurricane are all just different names for the same basic weather phenomenon.

They are all powerful, spinning storms collectively called tropical cyclones, which form over warm tropical waters and reach sustained internal wind speeds of 74 mph.

Hurricanes start in the Atlantic, Caribbean and northeast Pacific, while typhoons form in the western Pacific and southeastern Indian Ocean. If one of these monsters develops in certain parts of the Indian Ocean or part of the southwest Pacific Ocean, it goes by one of three variations of the generic term cyclone.

Australian Earthquake 7/5/11

Unusual moderate shallow earthquake close to Melbourne, Australia

Last update: July 5, 2011 at 2:24 pm by By Armand Vervaeck and James Daniell

Earthquake-Report.com has made a short video based on the text below. Feel free to take a look.

UPDATE 14:20 UTC : Australia is part of the Australian tectonic plate that runs from New Zealand to the Himalayas. There are no important boundaries near the Australian continent, but because the plates are moving continuously, stress can build up in local (sometimes even undetected) fault zones.

UPDATE 14:17 UTC : Seismologists are almost sure that the earthquake today was triggered by the same fault line that generated the March 2009 quakes.
